Main suspect in Odesa 2 May 2014 tragedy given high-ranking post in Russian-occupied Crimea

Halya Coynash, Kharkiv Human Rights Protection Group (KhPG)

Having spent six years claiming that the tragic fire in Odesa on 2 May 2014 was a ‘massacre’, and that Kyiv is protecting the perpetrators, Russia has not only shielded a main suspect, but has given him a top position in occupied Crimea.  Volodymyr Bodelan, the former head of the Odesa Emergency Services, has just been appointed deputy head of the Simferopol district in Crimea, after fleeing arrest in early 2016 and receiving Russian citizenship.

Blistering Criticism & Stark Warning 2 Years after Odesa 2 May Tragedy

Members of a civic initiative investigating the tragic disturbances and fire on 2 May 2014 have blasted Ukraine’s law enforcement bodies and leadership over the failed investigation.  The 2 May Group also warns that the situation now is even more dangerous than it was on the eve of the events which claimed the lives of 48 people.  It places the blame for this firmly on those politicians who, for their own political ends, have an interest in destabilizing the atmosphere in the city.
At a press conference on the eve of the second anniversary, the 2 May Group said that the police investigators involved in the investigation during 2014-15 should hand back their pay, since they assuredly did not earn it.  More has been achieved in the two months since the case was passed to Odesa investigators than over the previous year and a half.  Ironically, the transfer may have been a banal attempt to find scapegoats. This, thankfully, backfired, with the new investigators finally showing an interest in getting proper results.

Two Years Later, Kremlin’s Lethal Lies about Odesa Fire Still Motivate Donbas Recruits

Forty-eight people lost their lives in clashes between pro-unity supporters and pro-Russian backers and a fire in Odesa on May 2, 2014. Only hours later, Russia attempted to portray the mass riots and ensuing fire as a massacre, and that has continued regardless of several investigations, including one by the Council of Europe’s International Advisory Panel.

Prosecutor General quietly shelves vital Odesa 2 May investigation

Ukraine’s top law enforcement officials may not be trying to help the ongoing efforts to spread lies about a non-existent ‘Odesa massacre’, but they are achieving this by stymieing a proper investigation into the deadly disturbances and fire in Odesa on May 2, 2014

Prosecutor suspected of involvement in Odesa May 2 tragedy

Halya Coynash

The 2 May Group has challenged Odesa’s Regional Prosecutor to investigate allegations that could implicate one of his employees in the concealment of the weapon used by anti-Maidan activist Vitaly Budko [‘Botsman’] during the violent disturbances on May 2, 2014. This is only the latest disturbing development since there are already strong grounds for believing that Budko was helped to escape by a high-ranking police official.

Why are Ukraine’s leaders abetting Russian ‘Odesa Massacre’ lies?

                            Halya Coynash
The Ukrainian authorities’ failure to properly investigate the events of May 2, 2014 has now been compounded by failure to react adequately to a devastating report from an international team set up by the Council of Europe.  All of this is enabling Russia’s propaganda machine to continue spreading toxic lies about a ‘massacre’ that never took place.
A month has passed since the International Advisory Panel’s Nov 4 report blasted grave inadequacies in the investigation into the disturbances and fire on May 2, 2014 in which 48 people lost their lives.  The only response from Ukraine’s Interior Ministry came as soon as the report was published.  Since the comments did not reflect what the report had actually said, it is possible that those in the ministry had not read it – or hoped that others hadn’t.

Odesa 2 May Suspect: We were financed by Moscow

                                                                                                                             Halya Coynash

Serhiy Rudyk, one of the men facing charges over the May 2, 2014 disturbances in Odesa, is in no doubt that the anti-Maidan protests on Kulikovo Pole in the Spring of 2014 were paid for “by Moscow”*.  Rudyk, whose organization cannot be suspected of an anti-Russian bias, names the specific amounts paid for living at the anti-Maidan camp, and mentions rumours that Moscow paid 2 million dollars for the entire ‘Kulikovo Pole project’.
Rudyk was speaking very openly with a representative of the May 2 Group, a non-partisan civic initiative,  investigating the tragic disturbances and fire at the Trade Union building on Kulikovo Pole.  While remaining the assertions of one individual, Rudyk’s account does seem to correspond with other reported findings and hypotheses presented by the Group over the last year or more.

Continuing Obstruction of Odessa May 2 Investigation
